Maria played a key role in the 2020 presidential campaign as part of the united opposition front. After refusing to go into exile, she was abducted and later sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges widely condemned as politically motivated. Her courage and defiance have made her a symbol of peaceful resistance in Belarus.
